A European wheel has 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36, half red and half black, plus one green zero. You place chips on the grid, the dealer (or the software) spins, and the pocket where the ball stops decides every bet on the table.

Inside bets sit on the numbers themselves and pay more: a single number pays 35 to 1, a split between two numbers 17 to 1, a street of three 11 to 1, a corner of four 8 to 1. Outside bets cover big groups and pay less: red or black, odd or even and 1–18 or 19–36 pay 1 to 1, while a dozen or a column pays 2 to 1.

The green zero is where the house edge comes from. If the ball lands on it, every outside bet loses, unless the table uses the French rule explained further down.

Most online tables use English labels, but a few French words still turn up on the screen and in the game rules:

How to Pick a Roulette Table

Four checks before you sit down:

Look for one zero

A single-zero wheel (European or French) keeps less for the house than an American wheel with 0 and 00. The table name usually says which one it is.

Prefer La Partage for red/black

If you mostly bet red or black, a French table with La Partage halves your loss on a zero, which brings the edge on those bets down to about 1.35%.

Read the limits panel

Every table shows its minimum and maximum stake in the table info.

Mind the speed

European, French, American: Why the Zero Matters

European Roulette

One zero, 37 pockets. Because a straight bet pays 35 to 1 on a 1-in-37 chance, the house keeps about 2.7% of what is wagered over time (a return to player of about 97.3%).

French Roulette

The same single-zero wheel, often with La Partage: when zero comes up, you get half of an even-money stake back. Other bets work as in European roulette.

American Roulette

Two green pockets, 0 and 00, so 38 in total. The payouts don’t change, which pushes the house edge up to about 5.26%. There is rarely a reason to choose it over a single-zero table if both are in the lobby.

Lightning Roulette

Evolution calls it its most popular roulette-inspired game show. It is a normal single-zero wheel, but before each spin one to five "Lucky Numbers" get a random multiplier between 50x and 500x. The catch: a straight-up bet that isn’t multiplied pays 29 to 1 instead of 35 to 1. Other bets pay as usual.

You will see these three names everywhere. None of them changes the house edge, because every spin is independent. What they change is how your stakes move, and how quickly a losing run gets expensive.

Martingale

Double the stake after every loss, go back to the base stake after a win. It feels safe until a run of losses hits the table maximum or your budget: seven losses in a row starting from ₱20 already means a ₱2,560 bet.

Fibonacci

Stakes follow the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13… Move one step up after a loss and two steps back after a win. The climb is slower than Martingale, but the logic is the same.

D’Alembert

Add one unit after a loss, take one off after a win. Gentler swings, the same edge.

If you want a system, a fixed budget per session and a fixed stake per spin is the one that actually protects your money.
