Extra money or spins a casino gives you to sign up or to keep playing. It's never free cash: bonus money has to be played through a set number of times before it, and anything you win with it, can be withdrawn.

The simpler the terms, the better the bonus usually is, whatever the headline says.

• Deposit match: the casino adds a percentage of your deposit, up to a cap. Most welcome offers are one of these, sometimes split over the first three to five deposits.

Pay in ₱300 on a 100% match and you get ₱300 of bonus. What happens next depends on the casino.

Playable at once

The ₱300 lands in a bonus balance and you can bet with it straight away, but winnings stay locked until the wagering is done.

Locked until cleared

The ₱300 is shown but can't be used or withdrawn until you've played through the required amount with your own money. The terms say which type you have, usually under "bonus release".

A ₱90,000 match only pays ₱90,000 if you deposit ₱90,000. For most of us the number that matters is much smaller, and it's in the terms.

• Minimum qualifying deposit. The smallest deposit that triggers the bonus. It's often higher than the cashier minimum, so a ₱50 GCash deposit may get nothing.
• Wagering. How many times you must bet the bonus (and sometimes your deposit too) before withdrawing. Lower is better; our table shows 25x to 40x for the five above.
• Game contribution. Slots usually count 100%. Table and live games often count far less, or nothing.
• Time limit and max bet. How many days you get to clear it, and the largest bet allowed while you do. Break the max-bet rule and the casino can void your winnings.

Only claim a bonus with money you'd be fine losing. A bonus that pushes you to deposit more than you planned isn't a good deal.

There are many aspects we consider when we assess a casino bonus. In particular, we look at how easy it is to claim or achieve, the amount of money required to activate it and how realistic any time limits are to meet.

As we touched upon earlier, wagering requirements are an extremely common sight with casino bonuses. We tend to look for bonuses where these requirements are reasonably low and therefore easier to meet. While the actual rollover requirements will vary from casino to casino, they’re usually between 30x and 60x the deposit and/or bonus amount.

Wagering, or rollover, requirements are a common term and condition associated with casino bonuses, in particular new customer and deposit match bonuses. The wagering requirement is the amount of times you need to play through your deposit and/or bonus amount in order to release your winnings.

Let’s say a welcome bonus has a wagering requirement of 40x. This means you need to play through your deposit or bonus amount 40 times before you can withdraw your winnings. So, if your bonus amount is 500 PHP, you will need to playthrough 20,000 PHP in order to withdraw any winnings you’ve achieved. These winnings are held in a bonus wallet or as ‘pending’ until you’ve met the rollover terms.
